NIHR Highlight Childhood eczema

Published on 18 September 2017

Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition, characterised by dry, itchy and red skin. It can affect both children and adults, and is very individual in nature. Childhood eczema is usually the ‘atopic’ type, which commonly starts in childhood, often runs in families, and is linked to allergies and other allergic conditions like asthma and hay fever. Eczema is normally visible on the face, hands or body, and whilst it can be very itchy it is not contagious. This Highlight presents findings from studies looking at a range of treatments for childhood eczema. We also hear from parents and their children who have eczema, and gain a better understanding of caring for eczema direct from a GP and dermatologists, alongside the support provided by national organisations.
